Things to Do in Gili Trawangan: An Insider’s Guide Beyond the Obvious

Most guides to things to do in Gili Trawangan list the same activities: snorkeling, diving, cycling around the island.

All true. All worth doing.

But the difference between a good trip and a memorable one is timing  and intention.

Here’s our guide on how to experience Gili Trawangan properly.

Start early. Rent a bike and chase the sunrise. Sunrise on the east coast is quiet and almost meditative. The sea is calmest in the morning, which makes it the ideal time for snorkeling or diving. Coral visibility is clearer, and marine life is more active.

Cycle the full island loop at least once. It takes roughly 60–90 minutes at an easy pace, and our side of the island (West) offers the most dramatic sunset views. Stop for fresh coconut water along the way, or a cheeky well deserved drink.

If you want to dive, we recommend choosing operators who prioritize reef preservation and smaller group sizes. The waters around Gili are home to turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant coral systems — but they need responsible tourism to thrive.

Slow down in the afternoon. The heat peaks between 1–3 PM, making this the perfect time for a shaded lunch, an in-room spa treatment, or simply relaxing by the pool.

Personally, we think that sunset is a ritual here. The shoreline right in front of Lumi becomes golden and cinematic. It’s also the best time for horseback rides along the beach — one of the island’s most photographed experiences.

Staying at a boutique hotel like Lumi allows you to structure these experiences without rushing. You’re positioned close enough to everything, yet far enough to retreat when you need quiet.

Gili Trawangan isn’t about doing everything.

It’s about doing the right things at the right time.
